Abstract: Cricket in India transcends its status as a mere sport; it is an industry meticulously crafted and governed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). With its colossal fan base, immense commercial opportunities, and extensive infrastructure, cricket is not just a source of entertainment, but a cornerstone of national pride and economic prosperity, largely due to the strategic leadership of the BCCI.
At the helm of this industry, the BCCI orchestrates a myriad of operations, from organizing tournaments to negotiating broadcasting rights, ensuring the smooth functioning of cricket at both national and international levels. However, the BCCI does not operate in isolation; it collaborates with various stakeholders who form the backbone of the cricketing ecosystem.

These stakeholders encompass a diverse spectrum, ranging from players and coaches to sponsors, broadcasters, advertisers, and venue owners. Each stakeholder plays a vital role, contributing to the vitality and sustainability of cricket as an industry. With their talent and dedication, players are the heart and soul of the sport, while sponsors and advertisers inject financial support, driving revenue and growth.
Meanwhile, broadcasters bring the electrifying action to millions of screens worldwide, amplifying the sport's reach and influence. Venue owners provide the infrastructure necessary for hosting matches, ensuring fans can experience the thrill of live cricket first-hand.

The case study delves into the tumultuous period between 2005 and 2007 in Indian cricket, marked by profound cross-cultural conflict and leadership struggles between Greg Chappell, the Australian coach, and Sourav Ganguly, the iconic Indian captain, with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) acting as a pivotal player in the backdrop.

Greg Chappell, appointed as the coach of the Indian cricket team in 2005, brought with him a distinct coaching philosophy rooted in Australian cricket culture, emphasizing fitness, discipline and aggressive play. However, his approach clashed with the entrenched norms and leadership style embodied by Ganguly, who was celebrated for his astute captaincy and resilience.

The clash of cultures and leadership styles manifested in various on-field and off-field incidents, including selection controversies, communication breakdowns and public disagreements. Ganguly's authority as captain was challenged, leading to a fracture in team cohesion and performance setbacks. Simultaneously, the BCCI's role in mediating the conflict and managing the team dynamics came under scrutiny, highlighting broader governance issues within Indian cricket administration. The BCCI's contributions extend beyond governance. The inception of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2007, under the BCCI's umbrella, revolutionized cricket with its innovative format and global appeal (Kamath et al., 2020). This move not only boosted cricket's popularity but also significantly impacted the commercial aspect of the sport (Siddiqui et al., 2019).

This case study explores the complexities of cross-cultural dynamics, leadership challenges and organizational governance within the context of professional sports. It provides insights into the importance of effective communication, cultural sensitivity, and conflict resolution strategies in navigating such high-stakes environments. Moreover, it offers lessons for leaders, coaches and administrators in fostering collaboration, managing diversity and sustaining team success amidst adversity.
